John served in World War I from May 25, 1918 - April 18, 1919-He had an asthma attack while enroute to the war on the ship- Following his service in France he was hospitalized until 1925 and was discharged with TB. John received a pension of $40.00 per month until his death in 1969...The government eventually paid his sister Eunice $100.00 a month to care for him..He bought a farm and housed his father, his sister and his sister Mattie's child. The family lived on farm products and the $40.00 a month pension for most of their lives. In 1967 a relative arranged for John to receive a $43.00 SSI stipend. |

NOTES | Interview with granddaughter of Mary recalled her memories which were the following: Mary had a cabinet drawer in her kitchen where she kept sugar cookies for her grandchildren, She had a tobacco patch on her property. The grandchildren helped her with her patch for they removed the worms from the leaves, tied leaves and hung on fence to dry- twisted leaves and cut to chew. Mary was living with her son Jim in Detroit, AL when she died in 1934. The granddaughter remembered the neighbor women came and prepared her body for burial. They made her a new dress which opened down the front and had gray buttons and ruffles either side of the buttons. The men made a casket that had hinges on either side. The casket was removed from the home and taken to the church in a flat bed truck with the men sitting on either side of the truck. The casket was left open all the way to the funeral @ Primitive Baptist Church @Liberty Grove, MS.. |
